Clarke & Clarke Guide: Fabrics, Wallpapers, Morris and Collaborations

Clarke & Clarke covers a lot of ground, from William Morris patterns to bold designer collaborations and practical plains for busy family sofas. This guide sorts the range into its main families so you can find the right fabric or wallpaper for your project.

The William Morris Designs collection

Clarke & Clarke's William Morris Designs collection reinterprets the Arts & Crafts master's best-loved patterns for today's interiors. Acanthus, with its dramatic swirling leaves, is one of the stars. The Acanthus Wallpaper presents the design at a reduced scale, which makes it easier to live with in smaller rooms, and there's a matching Acanthus fabric printed on 100% cotton Panama.

The collection also translates Morris into texture. The Acanthus Weave Fabric is a chenille with an imprint of the acanthus design, ideal for upholstery, with a matte handle and colour in the ground that makes the tonal colourways more impactful. Acanthus Jacquard is a dual-purpose fabric with a silk/satin look, and Mallow Weave picks up the hibiscus flower of Mallow in a matte, soft, textural finish. Collaborations: Emma J Shipley and Breegan Jane

Clarke & Clarke x Emma Shipley brings the designer's hand-drawn style to fabric and wallpaper through her Animalia collection. The Amazon Wallpaper fills the wall with intricate jungle scenes, gravure printed on a paste-the-wall non-woven in Blue, Jungle, Navy, Pink and Red: a vibrant choice for a feature wall, cloakroom or bedroom. Amazon also comes as a cotton print and as a velvet rated to 100,000 rubs.

Audubon is inspired by the 19th-century naturalist and artist John James Audubon, with fantastical birds, mechanical bees and birds carrying metallic tags inscribed with the names of inspirational scientists. The Audubon Velvet Pink Fabric makes a striking armchair, and there's an indoor outdoor version too.

For a single dramatic wall, the Nairobi Sunset Wallpaper from Clarke & Clarke x Breegan Jane is a wide-width panel depicting an artistic interpretation of the African horizon, with softly blending colours and expressive brushstrokes in a hand-painted, digitally produced design.

Hard-working plains and velvets

Every patterned room needs plains to rest the eye, and this is where the range is especially practical. Allure Fabric is Clarke & Clarke's hard-wearing velvet, with a 250,000-rub rating suitable for severe contract use as well as the busiest homes, in 40 colours from Ivory and Dove to Magenta and Peacock. Amalfi is a linen-look textured plain in cotton and polyester, rated to 70,000 rubs, in 66 colours.

Studio G, Clarke & Clarke's sister brand, adds two more workhorses. Alora Fabric is a soft 100% cotton plain in 65 colours for curtains, blinds, cushions and heavy domestic upholstery, while Alessia is a 100% polyester with a tested rating of 100,000 rubs for family sofas and chairs.

Geometrics, texture and performance

The Metropolitan collection is for lovers of monochrome and graphic pattern. The Asra Noir Fabric is an embroidered geometric in a linen and cotton blend with intricate triangular motifs, best for curtains, and Albi Noir is an optical illusion of light and shadow reminiscent of M. C. Escher.

Elsewhere, Astraea is woven from recycled yarn with a rustic strié look, Arcata is a small-scale leopard print from the Alfresco Indoor Outdoor Weaves, and Asper is a vinyl wallcovering on a non-woven base from the Expressions Performance range, with a string emboss that creates a vertical slub. A good rule: pair one pattern with one texture and one plain, and keep the colours related.
