Seletti's Hybrid range is one of the most talked-about tableware collections we stock, and once you see a piece in person it's easy to understand why. In this guide we explain the idea behind Hybrid, walk through the pieces in the range, and share practical ways to mix them on your own table.
The idea behind Hybrid
Hybrid was designed for Seletti by the Italian studio CTRLZAK, and its starting point is simple: when East meets West. The collection draws on centuries of Western and Eastern ceramic production, combining historic decorations from both traditions into contemporary pieces.
The clever part is the split. Each piece is divided into two halves, with traditional Western motifs on one side and Eastern patterns and imagery on the other, joined so neatly that the eye reads it as a single object at first glance. It's a playful comment on how cultures blend, and it makes every plate a talking point. Most of the range is made in fine bone china, which gives it a light, refined feel in the hand.
The pieces in the range
Hybrid covers far more than plates, so you can build a full table or simply add a few accents. Here is how the range breaks down:
- Plates: the Hybrid Dinner Plate combines two decorative worlds in one piece of fine bone china, the 20cm Hybrid Fruit Plate suits dessert, cake or side dishes, and the 15cm Hybrid Bread Plate is ideal for bread and small bites.
- Bowls: choose the wide Hybrid Soup Bowl for soups and pasta, the 15cm Hybrid Bowl for cereal and everyday use, or the little 10.5cm Hybrid Fruit Bowl for berries and nibbles.
- Serving pieces: the Hybrid Round Tray Dorotea is a generous 35cm bone china platter, the Hybrid Salad Bowl is made for sharing, and the footed Hybrid Cake Stand turns afternoon tea into an occasion.
- Tea and coffee: the Hybrid Mug, the matching coffee cup and the Hybrid Coffee Spoons Armilla in bone china give a daily cuppa a bit of ceremony.
Beyond the table there are also glasses, a vase, cotton tablemats and cushion covers that carry the same decorations, so the look can run from the dining room into the rest of the house.
How to mix Hybrid pieces
Because every piece already carries two patterns, Hybrid looks best when you let it lead and keep everything else calm. A few approaches that work well:
- Start with one hero. If you're new to the range, a single serving piece such as the round tray or cake stand on a plain table makes a strong statement without committing to a full set.
- Layer by size. Stack a dinner plate, fruit plate and bowl in different designs. The shared split motif ties them together, so mismatching feels deliberate rather than random.
- Keep the base simple. White or plain linen, clear glass and simple cutlery let the decoration do the talking. Pick one colour from the patterns and repeat it in napkins or flowers.
- Mix with what you own. Hybrid sits happily alongside plain white china. Use Hybrid side plates and bowls with your existing dinner plates for an easy start.
Everyday use or special occasions?
Both. Mugs, cereal bowls and bread plates are made for daily use, so you get to enjoy the designs every morning rather than keeping them in a cupboard. For dinners and celebrations, bring out the larger serveware and cake stand and let the table become the centrepiece. A tiered spread of Hybrid at afternoon tea is always a crowd-pleaser.
Hybrid also makes a thoughtful gift. A pair of mugs or a set of coffee spoons is an easy introduction for someone who loves design, and they can add to it over time.
