La Palma Lamp - Seletti

La Palma designed by Kranen & Gille for Seletti is a floor lamp with circular base and curved rod in red painted metal. The head is made of metal and simulates the shape of palm leaves with a central LED light source. 

From the designer "Each of our designs is part of a world we build from our imagination. A world that fulfils our desires at a particular moment in time. Thus, LaPalma was born early in 2021, when the world was closed and our view was limited to our snowy garden fence. The work of studio Kranen/Gille was ongoing but was, of course, deadly boring from home.

In a series of remote design sessions, a place we would have loved to escape to at that moment emerged. A warm place with a beach, a drink, beautiful furniture but above all: palm trees. Tall and waving, welcoming us and inviting us to have a drink in this beautiful place.

From all that this place has to offer, we worked the palm tree into an industrial product to get as close as possible to our ideal destination, the perfect escape so to say. The process that followed was interesting because a palm tree is of course an iconic image that, with all its symbolism, has already found its home in pop culture in many ways."

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

After graduating at Design Academy Eindhoven in 2004 both Kranen and Gille, who found recognition in each other’s work, initially went their own way. When the two met again in 2006  they started working on a project to be shown at 2007’s Salone Del Mobile in Milan “The Von Trapp Dining Room” a series of products inspired on Tiroler volkskunst. After this presentation Kranen/Gille came to life as a studio, working on follow up projects to be shown at fairs such as Design Miami and PAD London.

As time passed Kranen/Gille started working more and more with consumer brands, realising accessible products in order to spread their vision on aesthetics. Kranen/Gille products mostly start their existence as scrapheap sketches in order to keep an open eye on the product itself. Working in this way enables Kranen and Gille to design freely before products end up in CAD programs, a feature that we hope one can feel when looking at a Kranen/Gille product.
