This is a unique and rare antique Tabriz carpet (circa 1910) that is in impeccable condition.
Tabriz is one of the largest cities in Iran located 600km west of Tehran, it is also the capital in the province of Azerbajdzjan. Tabriz is globally renowned as one of the oldest and most diverse locations for high quality carpets made by master weavers and has arguably been at the centre of carpet production longer than any other city in Iran. It is therefore not surprising that carpets from Tabriz are reputed to be made using the highest technical standards with the most varied styles, colours and designs.
You can expect to see curve-linear designs, Safavid emblems, allover Herati (fish) patterns, spectacular medallions and masterful motifs of all shapes and sizes. The four seasons is a popular motif featured in Tabriz carpets which describes the life of the Persian farmer during spring, summer, autumn and winter. Ancient palaces and ruins are often seen on the carpets. On the corners it is sometimes possible to see the four great Persian poets: Sadi, Hafez, Ferdowsi and Omar Khayam. There is no particular colour scheme but you can expect a wide range from rich jewel tones to subtle pastels.
In particular, three Persian master-weavers from the late 19th century were especially prolific in contributing to Tabriz's revival which saw merchants exporting rugs to Western markets on a large scale, namely: Haji Jalili, Sheik Safi and Kurban Dai.
Antique Tabriz rugs are some of the most sought after carpets in the world, regarded by aficionados and collectors as some of the finest Persian carpets to have ever been produced and they are highly decorative pieces of art too.
