Born in Munich in 1932, Richard Sapper moved to Milan in the 1950s, where he worked with Gio Ponti before a long partnership with Marco Zanuso that lasted until 1975. He taught at leading Italian and international universities, won the Compasso d’Oro eleven times and received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. His style combines technical innovation, essential forms and attention to detail. His designs for Alessi include the 9090 espresso coffee maker, the company’s first Compasso d’Oro winner, and the 9091 kettle with its melodic whistle. He died in 2015.

The Italian company was founded in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi and initially concentrated on metal kitchenware. Its coffee pots became so popular that by 1924 the Alessi name was well established.
By the 1950s the company had broadened its approach, collaborating with well-known designers to break away from modernism and traditional design and explore more unconventional ideas, including those of groups such as Studio Alchimia (Alessandro Mendini) and Memphis (Ettore Sottsass). Other designers associated with Alessi include Aldo Rossi, Philippe Starck and Michael Graves, and this collaborative, creative approach has become the hallmark of the brand.
