The Rico series from ferm LIVING is built around curves and volume: soft lines, rounded forms and what the designers describe as an embracing expression. It comes in several pieces, from two-seat to four-seat sofas, a chaise and a lounge chair, so the real question is which combination suits your room. This guide runs through each piece and how to put them together.
The Rico sofas: 2, 3 or 4 seats
All three Rico sofas are handmade in Italy and share the same look: a sturdy frame softened by bouclé upholstery. The bouclé is woven from uneven yarn, which gives the surface its rich, loopy texture.
- The Rico 2 Seater Sofa suits smaller living rooms, snugs and bedrooms, or works as a second sofa opposite a larger one.
- The Rico 3 Seater Sofa is the all-rounder for a main living room where two or three people regularly sit together.
- The Rico 4 Seater Sofa makes a bold statement in a larger room or open-plan space, and gives a family room to spread out.
Before choosing, measure the wall or the space you want the sofa to anchor, and leave room to walk around it. Because Rico's rounded shapes have real presence, it often looks better with a little breathing space than squeezed into an alcove.
The chaise options: Divan and Curve Seat
The Rico Divan comes as a left or right chaise longue and is very much a piece of furniture in its own right. It could pass as a daybed, looks a little like a settee and has the feel of a chaise lounge. It is handmade in Italy like the sofas. Choose left or right depending on where you want the open end: usually facing the window, the fire or the view.
The Rico Curve Seat blends a chaise longue with a love seat. Its curves make it a strong choice for the middle of a room, where it can be seen from every side, and it is upholstered in Tonus fabric.
The lounge chair and ottoman
The Rico Lounge Chair brings the same soft, curvaceous shape to a single seat, and is also handmade in Italy. It is the easiest way to add Rico to a room you already have, or to give a reading corner a proper chair.
The Rico Ottoman is the most flexible piece in the family. Use it as a footrest in front of the lounge chair, as a side table with a tray on top, or as a spare seat when guests arrive.
How to choose a configuration
Think about how you actually use the room, then build from there:
- Small living room or flat: a 2 seater plus the lounge chair gives seating for three without overwhelming the floor. Add the ottoman for feet up in the evenings.
- Family living room: a 3 or 4 seater as the anchor, with the ottoman as a footrest that can move around as needed.
- Room for lying down: pair a sofa with the Divan, so one person can stretch out while others sit.
- Open-plan or large room: float the Curve Seat in the middle of the room to divide it gently, with a sofa against the wall.
- Bedroom or study: a lounge chair and ottoman on their own make a comfortable reading spot.
Mixing pieces from the same series keeps the room coherent, because the curves and textures repeat from one seat to the next.
Styling Rico
Bouclé loves contrast. A smooth wooden coffee table, a linen cushion or a sleek metal lamp next to it will make the texture stand out. Keep cushions simple, as the sofa's shape is the feature. A rug that extends under the front legs of every piece ties a configuration together.
