ecoBirdy was born in Belgium with a simple mission: turn plastic waste into purposeful design. Its furniture and homeware are made from recycled plastic, primarily sourced from discarded toys. Think of all the plastic toys that are outgrown and forgotten; ecoBirdy gives that material a second, much longer life as furniture.
The brand sees itself as part of the circular economy, and education is a big part of the work. Its initiatives aim to teach both adults and children about plastic waste and sustainability, including an award-winning storybook and school programme.
The Material: How Old Toys Become ecothylene®
ecoBirdy uses its own in-house recycling method. The process runs from collection and cleaning to grinding and moulding, and the whole thing takes place in Europe, complying with stringent environmental and safety standards.
The result is ecothylene®, a patented material developed by ecoBirdy. What makes it so recognisable is that it keeps the colourful flecks of the original toys. Those speckles are not a printed pattern; they are the actual plastic of the toys that went into the piece, which is why every product is one of a kind.
For families, this is a lovely thing to explain to children: the chair they sit on was once a pile of old toys.
The Children's Range: Charlie and Luisa
The pieces most people know are designed for children. The award-winning Charlie Chair has ergonomic shapes, rounded edges and a generous seat, and it is light yet remarkably stable, so children can move it around themselves without it tipping over easily.
The Luisa Table is designed to make a set with it. Soft forms create a smooth transition between tabletop and legs, and its ergonomic shape supports even the most active children in different sitting positions. Together they make a playroom or kitchen corner that children can use on their own.
