Sandberg: The Swedish Wallpaper Brand and Its Design Approach

Sandberg is one of the Swedish wallpaper brands we are asked about most often in the shop. This post explains who Sandberg are, what shapes their designs and how their wallpaper collections are organised, so you know what you are looking at when you browse. (If you want room-by-room styling ideas, we cover those in a separate post.)

Who are Sandberg?

Sandberg Wallpaper was founded by the Sandberg family and is now part of the Gimmersta Group, which has specialised in wallpaper since the 1920s. The company works from Borås in Sweden and holds the title of Purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden.

Its stated mission is to add beauty to everyday life by creating sustainable wallpaper art. In practice, that means patterns designed to be lived with for years rather than swapped out with the seasons.

A hand-drawn, nature-led approach

Sandberg's designs are hand-drawn, and you can see it in the way leaves, branches and petals are rendered. Many patterns start with a plant and a story. Pine Wallpaper, one of Sandberg's best-loved designs, celebrates a tree that stands tall for centuries and stays green through bitter cold and snow, its branches covering the wall in a light, large-patterned dance.

Olof Wallpaper shows a braided branch of rudbeckia, a flower cultivated as early as the 17th century by the botanist Olof Rudbeck the Elder, who gave his name to both the flower and the pattern. That kind of botanical and historical detail runs right through the range.

Textile heritage and traditional techniques

The other strong thread in Sandberg's work is textiles. Gustav Wallpaper is a narrow stripe with small gold dots, inspired by the silk draperies and furniture fabrics of the 18th century. Lykke Wallpaper, one of the brand's most beloved checks, has squares with a soft textile feel that blend turn-of-the-century and contemporary styles.

Some designs are also made with traditional methods. Linnea Wallpaper, a calm pattern of clematis and honeysuckle, is produced as a traditional wallpaper, while Vinnie is made with a traditional printing technique that gives the surface texture and a vibrant character.

Designers and collections

Sandberg groups its patterns into named collections, often built around a designer or a place. A few examples from our range:

  • Palm Garden and Trädgården by Sara Bergqvist: Tom Wallpaper is an exotic variant of Sandberg's beloved Raphael, with a modern, international character.
  • Ett Hem, Öland by Karolina Kroon: Emrik Wallpaper uses dense plum branches reminiscent of the farmland of southern Öland.
  • The Carl and Karin Larsson collection: Maskrosen Wallpaper is a hand-painted, stylised dandelion, a symbol of the Larsson family's fighting spirit.
  • Collaborations: Ben Wallpaper, created with Johanna Bradford, is a bold stripe hiding tiny crocus flowers.
  • Villa Dalarö II: Sam is an updated version of Sandberg's cherished William stripe.

Patterns designed to work together

One thing that sets Sandberg apart is how the ranges are planned. Most collections mix a statement pattern with quieter stripes, checks and small repeats that are designed to sit alongside it. That makes it easy to paper adjoining rooms in related designs, or to use a stripe in a hallway and a floral in the room beyond, without the scheme feeling disjointed.

It also means many patterns come back in new versions over time, such as Tom from Raphael or Sam from William, so favourite designs keep finding new colourways and new homes.
